- Avoid excessive idling. Even long periods of “warming up” the engine during the winter is a waste of fuel.
- Buy a more fuel efficient car, a hybrid, or use a motorcycle if you’re single.
- Diesel engines use less fuel than the equivalent gas powered engine and may be a good choice in your area.
- Excessive braking and acceleration can reduce gas mileage with as much as 30%!
- Find out if your employer permits telecommuting (working from home).
- In freezing winter temperatures, the use of an engine block heater before starting will improve fuel mileage and decrease strain on the engine.
- Join a carpool or ride-share program.
- Maintain a speed of between 30 and 60 mph. This allows you car’s engine to run at the optimal rate and will improve your gas mileage.
- Make sure your tires are inflated to the manufacturer’s specifications, or to suit your vehicle load. Tire pressures that are too low will decrease your fuel mileage drastically.
- Proper maintenance of your car and tires will result in lower fuel consumption.
- Smell gas? Quite obvious, really, but check for fuel leaks. Stopping those leaks will result in an instant fuel saving and will reduce pollution, to boot!
- Use public transport or the train if available.
- Walk or get a bicycle! You will get a free exercise workout at the same time!
